The ceremony began on Monday, May 19, 2025, with the presence of academics, historians, professors, and students from various universities. Opening speeches were delivered by university officials, including Prof. Yahia Jafri, Rector of the University of Continuous Education, who highlighted the legacy of student and martyr sacrifices in securing freedom for future generations. He urged today’s students to carry the torch forward, echoing the message of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who commended students striving for success and contributing to Algeria’s prosperity.
Prof. Ammar Hayahim, Rector of University of Algiers 1, also praised the efforts of past students and encouraged today’s youth to actively participate in building a new Algeria.
One of the event’s most significant moments was a speech by Dr. Ammar Bouhouche, a veteran and former student who took part in the historic May 19, 1956 strike. He shared a firsthand account of the strike’s revolutionary impact and emphasized the pivotal role of today’s students in shaping Algeria’s future. Additionally, Prof. Tayeb Ahmed Mohamed, a communications expert from University of Algiers 3, gave a lecture on the role of media in supporting the student strike, both within and beyond Algeria, highlighting the importance of media documentation in preserving national memory.
The celebration also featured a startup exhibition, alongside a historical gallery showcasing images of martyrs and freedom fighters.
This initiative strengthens the bond between Algerian universities and their rich history, instilling in students a sense of belonging and appreciation for the sacrifices of past generations, who selflessly left their studies to fight for the country’s liberation.
