Study Day on the Occasion of World Environment Day Under the Slogan « Together for a Healthy, Smart, and Advanced Environment »
The Continuous EducationUniversity organized a study day titled « Together for a Healthy, Smart, and Advanced Environment » on the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5 each year. This year’s theme was « Our Earth, Our Future. » The event included a symbolic tree-planting campaign within the university, organized by the Directorate of Forests, along with an awareness presentation on the risks of forest fires and the role of education and awareness in preventing them.
This day is of great interest to environmental experts and enthusiasts worldwide. Algeria, like other countries, is not exempt from these concerns. It is a constitutional right for citizens to live in a healthy and advanced environment. To achieve this, environmental practices and technologies must be regulated, and all available resources, including AI technologies, must be utilized for environmental purposes.
In his opening speech, the Rector of the Continuous Education University emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and climate, noting that 70% of negative impacts on human life result from environmental imbalances. The university has three functions: education, research and innovation, and community service. The Rector highlighted the role of universities in addressing environmental issues through their laboratories and by fostering youth energy and environmental ideas.
Six months ago, the Continuous EducationUniversity initiated the establishment of green clubs across its 54 centers to serve the environment, development, and climate. The university also signed an agreement with the National Waste Agency to enable environmentally oriented students to engage in innovative environmental projects. The Rector concluded his speech by stating that environmental protection is a religious duty, a human endeavor, and a sign of civilization.
Professor Jalil Mehrez, an environmental economics expert, discussed the principle of sustainable development and its relationship to environmental protection, emphasizing the urgent need to address issues such as acid rain and pesticides, which pose significant environmental threats, particularly to future generations.
Dr. Amine Hameira highlighted the importance of smart environments in reducing risks through innovative infrastructure in areas such as transportation, energy and water management, smart waste management, and security systems. She discussed an ongoing project for automated soil preparation using AI, in collaboration with Professor Karima Douaissia. Dr. Hameira also stressed the importance of constitutionalizing environmental security and establishing an environmental regulatory authority.
Dr. Karima Douaissia, chairman of the scientific committee for the study day, along with student Sofiane Sali, presented a detailed overview of an innovative project for a smart waste bin, adopted by the Continuous Education University. Student Mohamed Amine Wanjali, who has a startup and a patent, presented a health and nutritional monitoring device for livestock via an electronic application. Mrs. AqilaBoudraa, representing the National Waste Agency, confirmed the agency’s readiness to support students’ projects, in line with the agreement between the two parties.
The representative of the Directorate of Forests and the Green Belt of Algiers highlighted the importance of forests in addressing global environmental changes, describing forests as the lungs of the earth. The directorate’s responsibilities include tree planting campaigns from National Tree Day to World Forestry Day, and forest fire protection from May 1 to October 31 each year, which is a challenge for the Directorate of Forests.
The representative of the Green Dam Directorate discussed its primary role in combating desertification and soil fertility loss, which worsens annually, particularly in the steppes. Following the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the project to restore, expand, and develop the Green Dam has been revived with a new and advanced vision. The university is called upon to support this vital program and project.
As part of the study day, a symbolic tree-planting campaign was held at the Continuous Education University’s headquarters, under the supervision of the Directorate of Forests and the Green Belt of Algiers. The event concluded with a call to develop a new environmental strategy, leveraging all youthful energies within startups and SMEs, and encouraging students to engage more in this technical and scientific environmental field.
